How to get the most out of your Winter Juice Cleanse?

So yes, I get the irony, it’s rainy and wet outside, and I have on multiple jumpers but I’m about to embark on a two day raw, juice cleanse.

Yes, I probably should have thought a little bit ahead and considered the fact that, it wouldn’t be a sunny warm day when I began my cleanse. But at least my immune system is going to be super-strong and healthy and hopefully I will be strolling through winter feeling amazing!!

Yep, I’m doing a juice cleanse in winter and this is day 1 of my one week cleanse. If you could see me right now you would laugh. I’m wrapped up in a blanket wearing 2 jumpers  and sipping my green soup having just finished my 2nd cooking workshop for the day. Its raining and miserable outside so instead of allowing myself little wet weather luxuries such as cups of warm tea and coffee (mmmmm coffee) and eating yummy sticky chocolaty banana bread, I’m cutting down on my coffee, tea, bread, sugar, wheat…..basically all those fun things and I’m replacing them with juice – lots and lots of juice.

I have done a Nomads juice cleanses with my Mum , but lets just say it did not go so well for her, cue migraine’s, nausea and fatigue. Personally I loved it, hence the winter juice cleanse.

I don’t know if it’s just me or if other people feel the same, but I love the positives that arise from a good cleanse. It’s a chance for the body to heal, to focus on energy and to clear its detoxification systems, which let’s be honest take a beating every day from coffee, sugar, dairy, gluten, preservatives, chemicals, pills etc. This is like a thank you to your body. You’re giving it a break for 2 days and allowing it time to regenerate and refuel in preparation for winter. Well that’s my plan.

Why I’m doing a Juice Cleanse:

  • My body needs a little R and R after a very busy summer when our social life was filled with weddings (mine and friends) engagement parties, BBQ etc. All those fun things that unfortunately have lead to a little bit too much of the naughty foods and not as many of the green juices and salads as I would like.
  • I also had my 4 wisdom teeth removed a few months ago and was on antibiotics (yuck) and lots of pain killers/ anti-inflammatories and so I wanted to do something nice for my body and help my liver to cleanse out all those toxins.

Throughout this post I’m going to be taking you through each day and going over what I ate, what I did and didn’t do and why so that you can learn exactly how to get the most out of your cleanse, if you choose to join me.

I will also be sharing some recipes which helped me to ease into and out of my cleanse, such as my broccoli and coconut soup, my lemon, ginger and turmeric tea and my simple smoothie recipes.

So let’s begin….

Pre Cleanse:

For two days you completely ease off any caffeine or greatly reduce it, you cut down on your bread intake and you also focus on increasing your intake of vegetables and fruit..

One of the reasons I was so eager to do this cleanse was because over the last two months I had allowed coffee to slip back into my diet. I’m not at all addicted to it (I more just love the taste) but I know that I am best when it’s only a weekend treat.

So as of Monday I cut it out of my diet along with my few cups of English breakfast tea, which I could easily drink all day if I allowed myself.

I also cut bread from my diet, as I was more than occasionally having a piece with avocado as a morning snack.  Other than that everything else pretty much stayed the same and I just focused on reducing my portion size.

Pre-Cleanse Activates:

There is so much that you can do to assist your body through the cleansing process. I made sure to adopt most of these methods throughout the week to give my body a helping hand and to also ensure that I got the most out of it.

Dry body brushing: if your anything like me you’ll have a dry body brush hanging in your bathroom that hardly gets used. Am I right? Well now’s the time to get scrubbing. While you’re doing this cleanse make sure to dry body brush each day before you hop in the shower and hopefully at the end of the week you will be hooked and have found a new daily habit (here’s hoping).

Make sure to start at your feet and work your way up, always sweeping towards the heart. This is great for the lymphatic system and helps to move toxins out of the body. Think beautiful soft skin!

Sleeping/Relaxation: If there was ever a time to take it easy, sleep in and cuddle up with a good book, this is it. We all need some R and R every now and then. Sometimes just allowing your body time to stop and relax will give you much more energy during and after the cleanse. I always sleep in more when I am taking part in a cleanse and if my schedule allows I will also take a nap during the day.

You will probably feel more tired while on a juice cleanse, so listen to your body and take the time to stop and restore.

Exercise: Gentle, easy exercises and movement is great for detoxification in the body. I’m not saying go and do a 1 hour hard barre class because you will probably collapse, but what I am saying is go for a walk along the beach, do some yoga and stretching. What ever feels right for your body.

One day you might have no energy and couldn’t possibly go for a walk and the next you might have tons of it.

Drink lots of water: We want to be doing everything possible in order to assist our bodies natural detoxification system and this means flushing out all the toxins in the body. I make sure to fill a pot with boiling water, 1 lemon, some ginger and turmeric and sip on that throughout the day. I will normally re-fill it 2-3 times in the day.

Ideally you will be needing to go to the bathroom a lot more during you’re cleanse, but this is a good sign as it means you are flushing out your toxins.

Meditation: Detoxing and meditating go hand in hand. I like to ideally meditate once a day for 10-20 minutes during the week of my cleanse and if I’m really onto it I will also fit in an extra meditation on the 2 days when I am doing my juice cleanse.

This is completely up to you but can be a great way to be in-tune with your body and listen to what is going on inside. Who knows you might even love it so much that you add it to your normal routine.

Oil-Pulling:  Now I’ve saved the hardest for last. If you don’t know what oil-pulling is take a read here. Basically its where you gargle with 1 tsp of coconut oil for 15-20 minutes. The oil pulls out toxins, which then stick to the oil and are removed from the mouth when you spit it out. It’s not for the faint hearted and does take some commitment and openness since let’s be honest it’s not that enjoyable, but it can be done. My advice is to be gargling the oil while you are busy doing something else such as reading emails, making the bed, taking a shower or washing the dishes. Basically, do anything to distract you from the task at hand. Good luck!

Reduce: caffeine, dairy, meat, gluten, sugar and preservatives

Day 2 of My Cleanse: Tuesday

Dinner: large salad + a small serve of vegetable chilli with brown rice or naked burrito bowls.

Juice Cleanse: Day 1: 6 X Green Juices

Yay I’m half way through my juice cleanse. It has been awful weather today, which has definitely added to the challenge, given how I m sitting inside sipping a cold green juice and dreaming about avocado toast and warm cups of coffee.

I decided to do this juice cleanse during the week as I thought it would be a lot easier to only drink juices if I was by myself rather than when Matt was around with all his yummy meals. What I didn’t take into consideration was the fact that I was at home, by myself and surrounded by food. It definitely look a lot of will powder not to just sneak something yummy to eat while no one was watching.

But I made it through and ended up consuming 6, 500 ml green juice throughout the day.

How I felt:

I definitely felt tired today, low in energy and even slightly agitated. But maybe that’s also because I’m surrounded by food and even when I’m just writing recipes or articles about food or replying to client’s food diaries, well…. it can get challenging.

I made sure I drank lots of warm mugs of lemon, turmeric and ginger tea, as well as Artemis’s Kidney + liver tea, which I love and which helped my body to cleanse. All this definitely helped me get over feeling cold, but it did mean that I was getting up every hour to go to the bathroom as I was drinking so much water.

I took it really easy today and just relaxed and stayed inside. I was going to go to a Pilate’s class but I just didn’t have the energy so I decided to cancel and do some light stretches instead. You really need to listen to your body when your doing a cleanse and make sure you’re not over doing it or pushing yourself too hard. This is the time to stop and curl up with a good book and let your body focus on cleansing.

Day 2: 6 X Fruit and Vegetable Juices

Yay its day 2 and that means I only have to make it through today and then it’s back to real food. I love the taste of all the Nomad juices; they really do make it so easy to just drink liquids all day. Today I’m actually feeling really good with lots of energy. I’m still taking it easy and being a homebody but I can already tell that my body is more energized and happier than yesterday.

I did it!! Two days of vegetable juice and lots and lots of cups of herbal tea. I’m feeling great but definitely ready to eat something solid. Take a read below for a guide for what to eat post cleanse. This is so important especially since it can be so tempting to eat everything in sight, but your body will thankyou if you ease back into it and start simple.

Post- Cleanse:

Once again take it easy. Continue with the dry body brushing, oil pulling and meditation and make sure to slowly easy back into your normal routine. I know it can be so tempting to down your last drink, order burger fuel and inhale all those foods that you have been dreaming about, but that is not the solution.

You need to start slow. Spend the first day post-cleanse drinking smoothies, eating soups and slowly adding in normal foods. Ideally you should take another 2-3 days to get back to normal, which will lengthen the cleanse and allow you to notice more benefits from your cleanse.

Post Cleanse Food:

Breakfast: Smoothies, fresh juice, small bowls of porridge, well soaked chia puddings etc.

Lunch: big colourful salads, soaked/cooked grains+ lots of vegetables plus big bowls of soup.

Dinner: Similar to lunch, lots of colour and nothing to hard to digest. No meat, dairy, or eggs.

Snacks: lots of fruit, vegetables, a few nuts and seeds, some homemade bliss balls.

Wow that’s it. I have taken you through my 1-week winter cleanse and I hope I have inspired you to join me and give your body some time to heal and restore. Remember that its not just about the 2-day juice cleanse but it’s the whole week surrounding it.

Really take your time, listen to your body and spend that week focusing on you and healing your body. It doesn’t matter if you are doing it to cleanse, to loose weight, to boost your immune system…its all the same. It’s a chance for your body to be its best and to get a huge dose of nutrients, so why wouldn’t you want to extend that cleansing and get the most out of it.

If you have any questions about completing a cleanse successfully, please contact me at as I am more than happy to answer them. If a cleanse seems far too scary but you still want some of the benefits, then I can create tailored programs and help you to cleanse naturally through the food you eat.
