I have a love-hate relationship with coffee. Half the time I’m excusing myself by saying things like, “it will give you so much energy” or “you’re Italian…….so it’s basically in your DNA”, where as other days, I’m like “put the coffee down…you know lemon water is way better for you” and “you’re a nutritionist…you can’t drink coffee”. You see my problem!!
It’s always backwards and forwards, backwards and forwards. I go through months of not touching it, then one day I’ll find myself sitting and sipping a cup of coffee and thinking to myself “wait a minute when did I start drinking coffee again”. I think for me it will always be a little push and pull. Some weeks I’ll drink it everyday and then I’ll go through periods where I don’t need it or want it. Maybe this is my balance.
Since I’m going through one of those drinking coffee stages, where it’s almost habitual, even when half asleep, to turn the kettle on and grind the beans, I felt it was time to put something up on the blog and show you that you can actually make a cup of coffee that’s pretty darn good for you, and shock, horror might even make you healthier….say what!!!!
This pretty much summarises my approach to wellness and health. I’m all about making every meal and drink that much better for you and this is a perfect example. A black cup of coffee could be neutral for your health….not partially good or bad for you, but throw in a splash of almond milk and a pinch of cinnamon and you’ve just taken it up a notch and given your body a drink that’s actually nourishing. How amazing is that!!
So here you go, after lots of cups of coffee (all in the name of research) I have come up with five ways to super boost your morning cup of coffee. I hope you like my suggestions and find them really easy switches and additions to super boost your caffeine fix.
You’ve probably heard about bullet-proof coffee before, which is when you add butter or ghee to your morning cup of coffee. Well this is a similar addition, but in my opinion it’s actually a whole lot healthier since instead of butter, I’m adding in coconut oil (and you all know how obsessed I am with coconut oil).
There are so many reasons why it’s beneficial to add coconut oil to your morning coffee, that I could write a whole post on it (and I probably will), but for now all you need to know is that it increases your energy levels (you gotta love that), it helps you to burn fat (wahoo!!) and it also keeps your immune system healthy.
I like to add ½- 1 tsp of Indah coconut oil to my morning coffee and I actually really love the taste of it. Ohh and it also helps to keep me feeling full, which is great if I’m having my cup of coffee as a mid-morning snack.
(PS: You can get 15% off your purchase at Indah if you use my code name Renee15)
Now this might seem a little bit strange, but yes I am suggesting you add a pinch of cinnamon to your morning coffee. There are a few reasons for adding this super spice to your coffee ASAP.
Firstly, cinnamon is just so unbelievably good for you, that you need to get it into your diet as many ways as possible.
Secondly, cinnamon works to balance your blood sugar levels, it also gives your coffee a little hit of sweetness (which I love) and it gives you a huge boost of antioxidants (even if it’s just a small tsp) ….and it improves your brain function. Talk about a seriously powerful cup of coffee.
We all know that we need to eat less sugar and so switching to more natural, healthy alternatives makes huge sense. I’m all about coconut sugar, since it’s low GI, it doesn’t mess with your energy levels like normal sugar, plus it tastes incredible and it’s so easy to use. I add 1/2 – 1 tsp to my morning coffee every now and then if I feel I need a little sweetness in my life.
Of course I had to bring this up, since almond milk is way cooler and we all know how much better we feel when we cut dairy from our lives and embrace nut milks.
By cutting this daily serve of dairy from your diet, your ensuring that your immune system stays healthier, that you still get a great source of calcium (yes almond milk is rich in calcium and best of all its really absorbable) and you’re also removing the risk of any added hormones, chemicals or sugar that comes with your normal glass of milk (yes sugar is added to milk….why do you think you’re so addicted it it!!)
I love heating a cup of fresh almond milk or coconut milk on the stove (with a pinch of cinnamon) and then I transfer it my blender for 30 seconds to transform it into frothy milky goodness which gets poured over my shot of coffee. Delicious!!
Don’t worry it sounds a lot scarier than it actually is. What I would love you to try, is add ¼ tsp of turmeric to your coffee, along with a pinch of black pepper. What this does, is give your body a huge does of antioxidants, which keep you healthy and well, while also keeping your body very alkaline and helping with any inflammation.
Now the reason you add a pinch of black pepper along side the turmeric is because it not only gives you a little boost, but it also helps to intensify the health benefits of the turmeric, which in my books makes it a must. My favourite way to get these two goodies into my coffee is by stirring them in with a tsp of coconut sugar, which makes it taste extra delicious.
So there you have it. My five favourite ways to super boost your morning cup of coffee. I’m sure there are one of two additions that are just right for you, so next time you go brew your coffee, pull out a different superfood, nut milk or natural sugar and give it a go. You might just find that you have more energy, better blood sugar levels, less sugar cravings and an even stronger immune system…all by just adopting these simple little changes.
I’d love to know how you drink your morning cup of coffee and If you try any of these super boosters. So please comment below.
